Genocide Documentary Wins Youth Film Festival "Facing History" Award

On May 13, Danbury high school students will be presented with The WYFF'06 (Westport Youth film Festival) Facing History Social Justice Award for their film, The Promise. This gripping eight minute documentary, depicting the atrocities of genocide presently taking place in the Sudan Region of Darfur, has been selected by WYFF'06 and the nationally renowned program, Facing History and Ourselves, as the film that deals most effectively in filmmaking technique and substance with the complex theme of social justice in our world. For more than 27 years, Facing History has engaged teachers and students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.

Created in an after school program, with their assistant principal, Tim Salem, The Promise hopes to raise awareness and motivate action against the killings of hundreds of innocent people on a daily basis in Darfur.

The name "The Promise" is a reminder of the promise the United Nations and the world made in 1945 to hold people accountable for crimes against humanity. With the backdrop of the Holocaust, narration, images and quotations, the focus is on the plight of the children of Darfur. The world promised "never again".

WYFF '06 a non for-profit international youth run film festival, founded and directed by high school students in affiliation with the Westport Art's Center, will take place on May 13th at the Fairfield Community Theater in Fairfield Ct. Now in it's third year, WYFF'06 will screen 90 student films from high school filmmakers throughout the US, Canada and Europe.

The Promise will have a special screening and Q & A with the student filmmakers at The Fairfield Theater Company, one of five venues holding panel discussions with professionals in the industry throughout the day.

WYFF '06 will also hold an awards ceremony at the end of the festival to honor best of documentary, comedy, experimental, music video, animation and public service announcement. A special award designed and donated by Tiffany's and Co. will go to the talented and compassionate students from Danbury high for The Promise. Following the awards ceremony, WYFF'06 will hold a rap party sponsored in part by The Chef's Table on the Post Rd in Fairfield.

The Festival is set for Saturday, May 13th 10am – 10pm at the Fairfield Community Theater, Post Rd. Fairfield, Ct.
